Why haven’t we done this before?

Last night we went to a birthday party at a friend’s house, and the theme was fantastic – a beer tasting! Everyone brought a 6 pack of their choice concealed in a bag so no one knew who brought what. Then our hosts wrapped each bottle in foil and numbered them by 6 pack, so you didn’t know which beer you were trying. There ended up being 19 6 packs in all, so they were divided up into 4 stations of 4-5 beers each. Once arranged, you moseyed your way around to each station and judged all the beers. Each beer was rated on aroma, first taste, mouthfeel, aftertaste, and overall impression, with the highest- and lowest-scoring beers getting a prize. Brilliant! Why have none of us thought of this idea before?

Another fun aspect was that it was our friend’s “Ron Dayne” birthday. A number of our friends are turning 33 this year, so in honor of the great Badger running back, each person gets to wear the #33 Ron Dayne jersey on his/her birthday. R started the tradition by purchasing the jersey for his birthday last summer, so it’s now making its way through the group. I’m definitely washing that thing before my turn! 😉

It was a great night spent with great friends. I feel like we’ve all been hibernating through this miserable winter, so it’s awesome knowing that this season is finally close to its end and we’re starting to see everyone again. Happy Ron Dayne, G, and thanks for a great party!

Working the kinks out

I’m still pretty new to this whole blogging world, so I’m doing a little tweaking of my site. The address is a tad different, my sidebar contents have a few different names, but hopefully you were still able to find me ok. And for those of you who had already subscribed to my blog, a huge THANK YOU!! Please make sure you sign up again through this page because my old feeds will be disabled shortly. Just click on one of the icons under “Follow Me” over there on the right and enter your info to keep receiving my updates. Please let me know if you are having any trouble subscribing, because I set those icons and their respective links up myself with no help from R, our resident computer expert. And by expert, I mean mega uber guru. This guy was tooling around on the interwebs and the Googles long before they existed in any form that we know today. If there was a classification higher than mega uber guru, that would be him.

Thanks for bearing with me through these little changes! As always, feel free to offer any suggestions for page design and content or post topics. And if you have or know someone who has a link that would like to be added to my blogroll over there, shoot that to me as well.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming…

Bottle of Red

A few weeks ago I thought it’d be fun to try having a glass of wine each night to improve my palate as well as experience a wider variety of vintages. The antioxidants are supposed to be heart-healthy too, so why not imbibe? Everything in moderation, my friends. Yeah, well, so far that’s failed. Best intentions and all.

But tonight I finally cracked open a new bottle. This one:

Cedar Creek Winery Cabernet Sauvignon. Not bad. A little dry for my liking, but then again I have a super sweet tooth, which applies to my drinks as well. I need to work on that with my reds.

I’ll try to keep you abreast of my travels through the world of wines, see which ones get the SM seal of approval. Cheers!

Friday Funk

TGIF y’all! Ah, the best time of the week – the workdays are almost over and the weekend is dawning. Even if I’m in a bad mood or the day starts off as a comedy of errors, I can never stay upset for long on a Friday simply because it’s Friii-day. One more day, that’s it. Then I play.

So I thought in honor of my favorite day of the week I’d implement a little tribute post each Friday. Introducing the “Friday Funk”. It won’t be very structured or have any rules per se; it’ll just be a little something that tickles my fancy each Friday that I want to share. So here we go – the inaugural FF:

One of my coworkers used a kick-ass phrase this morning: “saggy-titted hippies”. Awesome! Discuss…

Heartstrings, consider yourselves tugged

When I picked D up from daycare today, she was her usual jovial little self. Sitting in front of the mirrored play boxes, she was happy as a clam with one of those cloth books in her lap. Save the 2 bags of pooped-on clothes in her cubby, it seemed it had been a pretty good day.

Then on the way out we were sitting in a chair in front of the classroom next to D’s as I was putting her hat and coat on, when I happened to glance in the door of that room. One of the little girls in there, maybe a few months older than D, was sitting on the floor just sobbing and looking out at us. Big crocodile tears, bottom lip quivering and sticking out as far as humanly possible, tiny little chest and neck heaving with each huge crying gulp. Oh.my.god. Somebody pick that girl up and love her to death!! I felt so horrible seeing her just sitting there in what appeared to be utter agony. Turns out she was just upset because the little playmate next to her had taken away the dump truck she’d been playing with, but still! I wanted to rush in there and smother her with hugs.

And then I realized this whole motherhood thing really has changed me. You see, before I had D, I would have seen that baby crying and thought oh man, she looks unhappy, that’s too bad. But now? I took one look at that ridiculously sad little face and instantly flipped into oh-my-gosh-i-have-to-go-rescue-that-baby mode. The exact same thing happens when D has one of her crying jags. They don’t happen often, fortunately, but when that inconsolable cry starts, I just feel like my heart is being ripped out until I can fix whatever is wrong. That’s my job now – fix it! Make it better!

Yep, I’m a mommy.
